Questions to Ask a Golf Cart Rental Insurance Broker
We are not insurance advisors and nothing here is insurance advice. We rent carts, we have sat through these conversations, and we have watched operators find out what their policy did not cover at the worst possible moment.
So this is a list of questions, not answers. Every item below is something to ask a licensed broker in your state. We have deliberately not told you what any policy covers, named a carrier, or estimated a premium, because we do not know your fleet, your state or your operation.
Print it. Take it to the meeting. Write their answers in the margin and keep the sheet.
How the policy classifies your carts
How does this policy classify a golf cart, and does it classify a low-speed vehicle differently? The two are separate categories in many states and the distinction can change what applies.
Does the classification change when the cart is driven on a public road rather than inside a community? Where your renters actually drive may not match how the policy is written.
Does it change for a street-legal cart with a VIN, a plate and registration? Ask this even if only part of your fleet is registered.
How do you want each cart identified on the schedule: VIN, plate, serial number? Ask what happens if a cart is on the road and not on the schedule.
Who is covered, and when
Who is covered while a renter is driving?
Who is covered while my employee is driving, on a delivery or moving a cart between locations?
Is a passenger covered, and does exceeding the cart's seating capacity change that?
What happens if someone who was not named on the rental agreement was driving?
Is there a minimum driver age for coverage, and how does it relate to the minimum age I set in my agreement? If those two numbers differ, find out which one governs.
Does a driver needing to hold a valid license appear anywhere in this policy?
What voids or limits coverage
Ask each of these directly and write down the answer.
Unlicensed driver. Driver under the age stated in the policy. More passengers than the cart is built for. Driving off-road, on a beach, or somewhere the cart is not permitted. Alcohol involved. Driving after dark, or without working lights. A cart with a known unrepaired safety defect. A rental that ran past its agreed return time.
Then ask the follow-up that matters: what proof do you need from me to show the exclusion did not apply?
Renter-provided insurance
Does a renter's own auto or homeowner policy change anything about my coverage?
If my agreement says the renter's insurance is primary, does this policy accept that, and what do you need to see?
Am I allowed to require proof of the renter's insurance, and if I collect it, do you want a copy?
Delivery and transport
Am I covered while a cart is on a trailer between my yard and a customer?
Am I covered while a cart sits at a customer's rental property before the rental starts or after it ends?
Does delivering to a private community, a gated resort or an HOA property change anything? Some venues carry their own requirements, so ask whether you would need to be named on anything.
Does the vehicle towing the trailer need separate commercial coverage?
After an incident
Who do I call first, and within how long?
What documentation do you want, and in what format? Ask specifically about photographs, the signed rental agreement, the condition record, and the police report if there is one.
Do you want photographs from before the rental as well as after? Ask whether they need to be unedited originals, and what date evidence they accept.
How long do you want me to keep records, and for what? Ask your broker for their number rather than guessing.
How does a claim affect my renewal?
Is there a threshold below which I am better off not filing?
Seasonal fleet changes
I run more carts in season than out. How is that handled?
What happens if I add carts mid-term, and how quickly do they need to be on the schedule?
Can I suspend or reduce coverage on carts sitting through the off-season?
Do carts I sell or retire need to come off, and who is responsible for telling you?
The policy itself
What are the limits per occurrence and in aggregate, and what is the deductible?
Is this occurrence-based or claims-made? Ask what happens to a claim reported after you switch carriers.
What is not covered that a cart rental operator would expect to be covered? The most useful question on this page. A good broker will answer it honestly and the answer will surprise you.
What do other cart rental operators you write typically carry that I have not asked about?
What would make you decline to renew me?
Before you leave the meeting
- Ask for the full policy document, not a summary or a certificate
- Ask which answers they gave you are in the policy language and which are practice
- Ask for anything material in writing
- Ask when the renewal date is and what notice you get on a rate change
- Ask what they need from you before the season starts
Not insurance, legal or financial advice. We do not sell insurance and we have no relationship with any carrier or broker. Coverage, terminology and state law vary; only a licensed broker in your state can tell you what applies to your operation. We rent carts at Welaka Golf Carts and built Greenlit to run it.
